How to Self-Inject a Biologic Medication
Step-by-step guide · Injection site selection · Tips for comfort · When to call your pharmacist
📌 Always Follow Your Medication's Instructions
Your specific biologic comes with a medication guide and device-specific instructions. This page provides general guidance — always refer to your prescriber's instructions and your medication's patient information leaflet first.
Before Your First Injection
- Complete injection training with your BiologicHealthPlus pharmacist or a nurse educator before administering your first dose
- Remove your medication from the refrigerator and allow it to reach room temperature (typically 15–30 minutes) — this reduces injection discomfort
- Check the expiration date and inspect the solution — do not use if discolored, cloudy, or containing visible particles (unless your medication is expected to appear cloudy)
- Gather your supplies: medication, alcohol wipes, cotton balls or gauze, and a sharps disposal container
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water
Approved Injection Sites
🔵 Abdomen
Most common site. Inject at least 2 inches from the navel. Avoid the navel itself and any area with scarring or bruising.
🔵 Front of Thigh
Good alternative site. Middle third of the outer thigh. Easy to reach and good tissue depth.
🔵 Back of Upper Arm
Used by some patients. Typically requires assistance from another person for proper technique.
⚠️ Rotation
Rotate sites with each injection to prevent lipohypertrophy (tissue thickening). Keep a log of injection sites.
General Injection Steps
- Choose your injection site and clean with an alcohol wipe. Allow to dry completely (30 seconds).
- Remove the cap from the auto-injector or prepare the prefilled syringe per your device instructions.
- Pinch the skin gently at the injection site (if required for your device).
- Hold the auto-injector at a 90° angle (or as specified in your instructions).
- Press the injector firmly against the skin and activate per device instructions. Hold until the injection is complete (listen for the click or watch the indicator window).
- Remove the device and apply gentle pressure with a cotton ball. Do not rub.
- Safely dispose of the used device in your sharps container immediately.
