How Does Imiquimod Cream 5% Work?
Imiquimod activates Toll-Like Receptor 7 (TLR7) and TLR8 on immune cells (plasmacytoid dendritic cells, macrophages), triggering production of interferon-alpha and other cytokines. This innate immune activation induces an inflammatory response that destroys AK lesions, sBCC, and HPV-infected cells through immune-mediated cytotoxicity.
Dosage & Administration
AK: Apply 2–3 times weekly (not daily) to affected area; wash off after 8 hours. Treatment duration: up to 16 weeks. sBCC: Apply 5 times per week for 6 weeks. External warts: Apply 3 times weekly; wash off after 6–10 hours. Rest periods may be needed if severe local reactions occur.
