How Does Abiraterone Acetate Work?
Abiraterone acetate is converted in vivo to abiraterone, which inhibits CYP17 (17α-hydroxylase / C17,20-lyase) — a key enzyme in androgen biosynthesis in the adrenal glands, testes, and prostate tumor tissue. By blocking this enzyme, abiraterone reduces testosterone and other androgen levels below those achievable by castration alone. Must be used with a corticosteroid to prevent mineralocorticoid excess side effects.
Dosage & Administration
Standard abiraterone acetate (generic/Zytiga): 1000 mg orally once daily on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before and 2 hours after eating), taken with prednisone 5 mg twice daily. Yonsa (fine particle formulation): 500 mg with food. Dose adjustments apply for hepatic impairment.
